Analysis of body composition and phase angle changes in gastric cancer surgery patients using bioelectrical impedance
Gastric cancer patients undergo surgery as a fundamental treatment, and our objective was to confirm the changes in body weight, body fat mass, muscle mass, and lean body mass over time after surgery. The present study examined the changes in body weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, and body fat percentage phase angle in 17 patients who underwent gastric cancer surgery at K University Hospital. The findings of this study indicate a tendency for weight to decrease at three months post-surgery, followed by an increase at six months. The results indicated a tendency for body fat mass and % body fat to decrease, while soft lean mass and skeletal muscle mass exhibited a tendency to increase. Phase angle demonstrated a tendency to increase over time. The findings of this study were inconsistent with those of previous studies. This study had limitations, as it was challenging to make an accurate assessment due to the lack of consideration of the treatment process and nutritional status of gastric cancer patients after surgery. Consequently, future studies will require a more comprehensive approach to account for these factors.
