Plantar Flap Imbrication and Mobilization: A Technique for the Correction of Floating Toes

The Weil osteotomy is a common procedure used to address length discrepancies in the metatarsal cascade. The most widely reported complication from this procedure is a floating toe. While other studies have described approaches to reduce the likelihood of the deformity occurring intraoperatively, there is paucity in the literature about soft tissue techniques that can be used to correct this deformity. We report a novel surgical technique to correct the floating toe after Weil osteotomy by creating a plantar flap imbrication to mobilize soft tissues. Level of Evidence: Level V—Diagnostic.

Abstract

The Weil osteotomy is a common procedure used to address length discrepancies in the metatarsal cascade. The most widely reported complication from this procedure is a floating toe. While other studies have described approaches to reduce the likelihood of the deformity occurring intraoperatively, there is paucity in the literature about soft tissue techniques that can be used to correct this deformity. We report a novel surgical technique to correct the floating toe after Weil osteotomy by creating a plantar flap imbrication to mobilize soft tissues. Level of Evidence: Level V—Diagnostic.
