EP16.47: Prenatal diagnosis of a giant chorioangioma with favourable outcome
Placental chorioangioma, a benign vascular tumour exceeding four centimetres in size, requires early antenatal diagnosis for complication prevention. Ultrasound is vital for screening, monitoring, and management. Mrs. T.F., 37 years old, with two previous Caesarean deliveries, had a routine ultrasound at 27 weeks showing normal pregnancy parameters but revealed a giant chorioangioma measuring 85.5 x 46mm within the placenta. Fetal middle cerebral artery Doppler ruled out anemia. Management included close surveillance with weekly ultrasounds. Expectant management continued, with plans for laser electrocoagulation if needed, though unnecessary in this case. At 37 weeks and 2 days, Mrs. T.F. spontaneously went into labour and delivered via Caesarean section. The baby, a female weighing 2300g, had normal hemoglobin. Perioperative findings confirmed the diagnosis. In asymptomatic cases of giant placental chorioangioma, expectant management with ultrasound monitoring is often suitable, avoiding unnecessary invasive procedures.
