EP07.56: Congenital digestive tract anomalies: case series
The development of an anatomically normal and functional digestive tract is under the strict control of various molecular mechanisms. Disruption of a single molecular interaction affects subsequent mechanisms, resulting in an altered gastrointestinal tract with various dysfunctions, some of which can be diagnosed prenatally. In this study, we aimed to describe a series of distinct congenital anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract: a mixed heterotopic gastrointestinal/respiratory oral cyst, a duodenal stenosis, an esophageal atresia, a jejunal atresia, and an anal imperforation. The presented cases were diagnosed in the second trimester of pregnancy. Prenatal diagnosis is of the greatest importance in defining the subsequent therapeutic strategy. After birth, the fetuses underwent further imaging investigations, which confirmed the diagnoses and guided the subsequent appropriate treatment, which in most cases is surgical intervention. Macroscopic and microscopic pathologic diagnosis is essential for further therapies and counselling, as some congenital anomalies of the digestive tract may be part of a syndrome. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment reduce morbidity and mortality. Follow-up showed positive results with an increased quality of life in each case.
