EP22.26: Use of ultrasound scan in pretreatment evaluation of cervical cancer: experience from Federal Medical Center, Birnin‐Kebbi
The FIGO staging of cervical cancer transited from clinical staging to clinical pathological staging in 2018 with clearly defined role of radiological evaluation in staging cervical cancer. We hereby present our experience with use of ultrasound scan in pretreatment evaluation of cervical cancer given the challenges of access to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). This is a narrative review of the utilization of ultrasound scan for pretreatment evaluation of parametrial involvement of cervical cancer in our institution with suggestions for expansion of the role of ultrasound scan for staging of cervical cancer in low resource settings. The review period was classified into pre- and post-use of ultrasound for parametrial evaluation. A total of 63 cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed within the study period of September 2018 to September 2023. There were 3 cases of scheduled radical hysterectomy that were abandoned intraoperatively in the era preceding use of USS for determination of bladder muscle involvement. While only 1 case of abandoned scheduled radical hysterectomy intraoperatively postera of use of USS for determination of bladder muscle involvement. We have demonstrated value of ultrasound in pretreatment evaluation of parametrium for bladder muscle involvement in locally advanced cervical cancer cases. The clinical benefits of this finding needs to be tested in a multicentric study.
