EP12.11: Concurrence of FGR and pre‐eclampsia in mothers admitted to ICU

This study aims to conduct an analysis of risk factors, maternal characteristics, obstetric outcomes and maternal complications in patients with pre-eclampsia requiring hospitalization in the intensive care unit. This retrospective study was conducted in Ahwaz, Iran, at the tertiary centre from January to December 2020. The study focused on risk factors, maternal characteristics, obstetric outcomes and maternal complications. The data was retrieved from the electronic records of patients admitted to the intensive care unit with pre-eclampsia. During our study period, a total of 385 patients were identified as having pre-eclampsia of whom 108 required intensive care admission (28%). 69% of these patients had intrauterine growth restriction. The mean age was 31 years. BMI more than 30 was seen in 34% of these mothers. Blood pressure in 16% of patients was less than 140/90. The rate of IUFD was 2.2% and placental abruption occurred in 1.8% of patients. Considering the participants' comorbidities, 58 out of 108 had comorbid conditions, including history of gestational hypertension, 32 (29%), and history of gestational diabetes 14 (12%) and other medical disease such as lupus, cardiac and kidney disease was 5%, while 54% of the patients did not have any recognised comorbidity. Maternal mortality rate is 3.7% (4 patients) and due to flare up of lupus and cardiomyopathy and severe pulmonary edema. In conclusion, concurrence of FGR in mothers with pre-eclampsia admitted to ICU is very prominent (69%). More than half of mothers admitted had previous known medical disease. Sometimes serious complications occur even in blood pressure less than 140/90. Early detection and prevention of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in women with hypertensive disorders are essential.
