EP09.102: Prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of myxomatous degeneration of cardiac valves: a case series

Myxomatous degeneration of cardiac valves (MDCV) is a degenerative change of valves leading to thickening, prolapse and even rupture of tendon cords, which is an important cause of cardiac valve closure insufficiency. Its diagnosis is mostly determined by pathological examination. Fetal and neonatal MDCV have rarely reported, and only a few cases reported for prenatal diagnosis of MDCV due to insufficient knowledge about the characteristics of its pathology. We retrospectively identified 3 cases of prenatal MDCV from our Hospital from 2014 to 2024 and compared pathologic findings to conclude their echocardiography features. 3 fetuses mainly showed multiple valves anomalies, mainly involving the mitral valve and followed by tricuspid and aortic valves. The valvular lesions manifest as thickened, loose and lengthy leaflets, leaflet prolapse, systolic closure insufficiency, as well as moderate to severe regurgitation. 3 cases were confirmed as MDCV by pathological autopsy. In prenatal examination, multiple valves involved, leaflet prolapse and regurgitation are important echocardiographic features of MDCV. The description and suggestive diagnosis of morphological abnormalities can be made on the basis of this echocardiographic manifestation. Abstract

Myxomatous degeneration of cardiac valves (MDCV) is a degenerative change of valves leading to thickening, prolapse and even rupture of tendon cords, which is an important cause of cardiac valve closure insufficiency.
