EP22.34: Prevalence and management of immature teratomas of the ovary: a one‐year retrospective study
This study aims to determine the prevalence of immature ovarian teratomas among women undergoing ovarian cystectomy, assessing their clinical and histopathological features to inform management strategies. A retrospective analysis was conducted over a one-year period from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, including all women who underwent ovarian cystectomy for an ovarian cyst, either emergently or electively, at our institution. Patient demographics, clinical presentations, imaging findings, surgical interventions, and histopathological diagnoses were reviewed. Among 40 patients who underwent ovarian cystectomy during the study period, two cases of immature ovarian teratomas were identified. The first case involved an 18-year-old patient with a significant abdominopelvic mass diagnosed as an immature teratoma grade 2, FIGO stage IC1, following right adnexectomy with intraoperative capsular rupture. The second case was a 30-year-old G2P2 woman who underwent left adnexectomy for an adnexal mass, later confirmed as an immature teratoma, managed with adjuvant chemotherapy and fertility preservation. Both cases highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary evaluation and tailored management strategies. Immature ovarian teratomas, though rare, are significant malignancies predominantly affecting young women. Radiological imaging plays a crucial role in suspicion, but definitive diagnosis requires histopathology. Optimal management often involves conservative surgery to preserve fertility, supplemented by adjuvant chemotherapy based on tumour grade. Multidisciplinary collaboration is essential for effective treatment planning and patient care.
