EP01.40: The use of augmented reality and metaverse in fetal medicine for multidisciplinary discussion and medical teaching
To implement the use of the Metaverse and Augmented Reality (AR) in multidisciplinary discussion and medical teaching in fetal medicine. The first step was to train students (15) and specialists (8) from different areas in multidisciplinary discussions and medical teaching, which take place in real time and without geographical obstacles, adding features ranging from the possibility to view an imaging sequence of 2D slices to a shared navigation inside a 3D organ. These experiments have been developed in the Spatial.io platform, that supports a wide range of devices. The cases already studied are from ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) files. Cases in the first and second trimester of pregnancy were discussed based on US. In the third trimester, cases were evaluated from US and MRI. The mean age of the students was 24 and specialists 37 years old. For both, the use of metaverse and AR contributed to an easy understanding of the cases. Interaction between students and specialists without geographical obstacles was considered the most important feature. Metaverse and AR are technology under construction. They bring many new features to the medical field communication. It has great potential as a digital tool to help students and a multidisciplinary team to improve collaboration and understanding of complex fetal cases.
