Optimized VVC Transform Module Based on Fast MTS Decision

This paper introduces a fast multiple transform selection algorithm for Versatile Video Coding (VVC) using an energy compaction criterion. VVC has implemented novel coding tools to enhance coding efficiency. Among these tools is Multiple Transform Selection (MTS), which aims to improve VVC transform coding. However, incorporating MTS into the VVC coding process introduces additional complexity. To address this issue, we propose a complexity reduction algorithm that leverages the energy compaction criterion to simplify the selection process of MTS. The suggested algorithm streamlines the selection of transform combinations within the VVC transform module, replacing the initial, more complex selection method. Experimental results, conducted for Random Access (RA) configuration showed that the proposed method provides a 37.64% time saving for transform coding and achieves a reduction of 12.39% in overall coding runtime with minimal impact on coding efficiency.
