Types and Patterns of Utilizing ChatGPT Responses in College Student Writing

This study aims to examine how college student writers utilize responses from ChatGPT when writing, and to elucidate the characteristics of this usage. To achieve this, the study first examines the overall pattern of interactions between the writers and ChatGPT during the writing process. Subsequently, it categorizes the ways in which ChatGPT's responses are incorporated into the writers' work and investigates the patterns for each category.Firstly, the overall interaction patterns were analyzed by looking at 1) the total number of interactions and the number of responses based on type while writing one argumentative essay, 2) the writer's satisfaction with the responses from ChatGPT, and 3) the rate at which the responses from ChatGPT were actually reflected in the final draft. Secondly, the types and patterns of utilizing ChatGPT responses were categorized into five types: using Direct use, Summarizing and Restating, Framing, Synthesizing, and Leaping. The study then detailed the frequency of use for each type and the positive and negative aspects of each type through case analysis of the writers. The results of this study empirically demonstrate that interactions with ChatGPT can function as a “double-edged sword” that either enhances or diminishes the writing ability of the student, depending on the student's literacy level, critical thinking skills, authorial identity, and ethical awareness. The study suggests several prerequisites for future college writing education to focus more intensively on traditional educational goals, but pursued in new ways THE utilization of ChatGPT.
