Aerodynamic Heating Analysis on Rocket Fairings Using CFD and DSMC
In high-speed rockets, a thermal protection system on the fairings is necessary to protect payloads from aerodynamic heating. To design a thermal protection system, accurate prediction of the heat flux on the fairing during the ascending flight path is crucial. As the density changes with altitudes, the CFD analysis predicts well at low altitudes, and the DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte Carlo) analysis predicts well at high altitudes. The CFD and DSMC analysis on the fairing of the Nuri and Epsilon is conducted at a transition altitude. The formations of the shock wave of the Nuri and Epsilon analyses using CFD and DSMC are similar. The heat flux on the fairings is similar except near the stagnation point. . .
