System for radiation dose distribution monitoring in radiotherapy treatment planning
Cancer treatment often includes radiotherapy, especially when other options such as surgery are limited due to the type of cancer or the location of the tumour. Therefore, we developed a scalable detection system for the evaluation of the dose distributions in a 3D phantom during the preparation of the treatment plans under the photon radiotherapy procedure. The system is based on a configurable 3D phantom that is composed of tissue-equivalent printed scintillator cubes, a dedicated Data Acquisition (DAQ) system, and custom-made software. In this paper, we present the prototype system and the results of the first tests performed during the calibration with the therapeutic beam. The treatment procedure has to be optimised and verified before the patient is irradiated, and the system presented here can be useful for achieving this goal.
