Septated internal jugular vein: A case report
Central venous cannulation is a routine procedure in patients requiring inotropic support, long-term intravenous therapy or limited peripheral venous access. The anatomy of the internal jugular vein can present variants in terms of anomalous course, valves, and acquired thrombus in long-term cannulations. Endothelial injury due to both long-term cannulation and repeated cannulations can predispose to thrombus formation, as well as recanalization leading to stenosis and septations. We present a case report where in a patient presenting for completion of pancreaticoduodenectomy we encountered the presence of septa in the internal jugular vein.
