Ocorrence of Aeromonas spp. in fresh fish

The genus Aeromonas has emerged as important human pathogen responsible for several diseases. The bacteria Aeromonas is often found on the surface of fish and can be isolated from water and different food matrices due to cross-contamination in production foods. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of Aeromonas spp. bacteria in freshwater fish marketed in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, and to identify the isolated Aeromonas species. Fresh fish samples of the “pintado da Amazônia” (Pseudoplatystoma coruscans x Leiarius marmoratus) and “Tambatinga” (Colossoma macropomum x Piaractus brachypomum) species were obtained from various commercial outlets in the city of Cuiabá, including a supermarket, a fishmonger's shop, and a farm market. A bacteriological analysis was conducted on the fish samples, which involved the identification of Aeromonas spp. bacteria and the determination of their prevalence and concentration in the samples. The analysis revealed that bacteria of the genus Aeromonas spp. were present in 100% of the fresh fish samples obtained from different commercial establishments (a supermarket, fishmonger, and farm market), all of which were located in the city of Cuiabá. The results of the bacteriological analysis indicated that the fish samples tested positive for bacteria belonging to the genus Aeromonas. The presence of the Aeromonas spp. species, A. media, A. sobria, A. jandaii, A. caviae, A. salmonicida, and A. hydrophila was confirmed.
