Using Conditions and Control Structures Effectively: Can We Measure This?

We explore ways to automate assessing if beginner programmers are using conditions and control structures “effectively.” We consider several software metrics, and a novel approach designed specifically for this situation, and compare their effectiveness with manual assessment. Initial results reveal two approaches that are promising, with plans for further work to find a reliable approach.

Abstract

We explore ways to automate assessing if beginner programmers are using conditions and control structures “effectively.” We consider several software metrics, and a novel approach designed specifically for this situation, and compare their effectiveness with manual assessment. Initial results reveal two approaches that are promising, with plans for further work to find a reliable approach.
