Ablação total bilateral do conduto auditivo em cão com otite crônica: relato de caso
Total ear canal ablation (TECA) is recognized as the surgical procedure of choice for treating severe cases of chronic otitis in companion animals. When allopathic treatments or conservative protocols do not have the desired effect, otitis progresses and irreversible calcification of the ear cartilage occurs. The surgical method involves the complete removal of the ear canal, including the vertical and horizontal portions; the technique to be used is determined by the severity of the problem and the surgeon's decision. Considering the importance of TECA in clinical surgery, this case report documents the clinical presentation, surgical treatment and prognosis of a male mongrel dog, approximately five years old, affected by bilateral chronic otitis. Initially, the patient was treated clinically based on the history and symptoms presented, however, the response to medication was not completely effective. Given the chronic persistence of the disease, the animal underwent total ablation of both auditory canals, with the aim of correcting the clinical changes in order to provide a better quality of life and prevent future recurrences of otitis. The surgical technique used as treatment produced satisfactory results. Apart from deafness, there were no reports or observations of any postoperative complications such as infection or dehiscence of sutures.
