Toward Multifaceted SFG-Based Text Analysis Integrated with Critical Literacy Lesson Plans in the Korean EFL Context
This study explores an alternative lesson plan for EFL Korean college students to read the editorial genre of online English newspapers through multifunctional text analysis based on Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG), integrating it with critical literacy. For students familiar with traditional grammar, mainly focused on syntactic correctness, this approach using SFG metalanguage (such as transitivity, theme, and mood/modality) requires flexible yet recursive teaching cycles. It reviews research on various ESL/EFL college lessons employing this method, considering different proficiency levels and academic disciplines. The study suggests that multifaceted SFG-based text analysis at the micro-level is vital for advancing macro-level critical literacy, incorporating contextual factors.
