Construction is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world and the second largestemployer in India after agriculture. There is usually agreement that the construction industry generates avery high percentage of waste. Eliminating or reducing waste can result in significant cost savings for theconstruction industry. Lean production optimized production system performance against maturitystandards to meet unique customer requirements. This article describes the application of Lean principlesin the construction industry using suitable Lean Construction tools and relevant case studies. To improve efficiency and reduce waste, Lean Construction was introduced as a new management principlefor better execution. Achieving lean concepts in the construction industry presents many challenges. Theadoption of lean management in the construction industry is a major challenge in India.
