Three-Dimensional Structured NiFe2O4 Supported on TiO2 as a Heterogeneous Photo-Fenton Catalyst for Tetracycline Degradation

Heterogeneous photo-Fenton technology, coupling the Fenton reaction with photocatalysis, can effectively eliminate organic pollutants with solar energy and hydrogen peroxide. A highly catalytically active photo-Fenton catalyst, TiO2/3DOM-NFO, has been prepared by integrating three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) nickel ferrite (NFO) with TiO2. In addition, the peak rate constant for tetracycline degradation by 30TiO2/3DOM-NFO in the photo-Fenton system reached 0.05319 min–1 under simulated visible light, which is 5.8 times greater than that of pure TiO2, 3.9 times that of bulk NFO, and 2.9 times that of 3DOM-NFO. The excellent performance is primarily attributed to the synergetic effect of the heterojunction, the 3DOM architecture, and the assistance of Fe3+ in NFO being photoreduced to Fe2+, thereby promoting degradation efficiency. Additionally, preliminary mechanistic analysis of their photocatalytic properties was conducted with density functional theory calculations. This work offers a new approach to enhancing the effectiveness of photo-Fenton catalytic degradation antibiotics.
