Escaping Reality: Analyzing the Evolution of Avatar Skin Preferences in the Metaverse
This study investigates the dynamics of escapism through avatar skin choices within the Decentraland metaverse, where significant transactions of virtual goods occur. Using transactional data from Dune Analytics, the analysis focuses on three aesthetic escapism dimensions of avatar skins: Historicity, Mood, and Realness. Historicity assesses user preferences for historical, contemporary, or futuristic themes. Mood varies from dark to bright, reflecting emotional influences, while Realness ranges from realistic to fantastical. These dimensions serve as indicators for understanding the roles that digital skins play in enabling escapism and identity exploration within virtual environments. By applying Markov chain models, the research quantifies transition probabilities among various avatar skin states to identify prevailing user preferences. Findings demonstrate a strong preference for escapism, with many users selecting avatars that represent an alternative to reality.
