Integrated Lab-on-a-Chip Optical Glucose Sensing System Using a Silicon Waveguide Bragg Grating Device

Blood glucose monitoring is an essential tool for managing diabetes. This approach helps identify patterns in the fluctuation of blood glucose (sugar) levels that occur in response to diet, exercise, medication, and pathological processes associated with blood glucose fluctuations, such as diabetes mellitus. In this work, we present a waveguide Bragg grating (WBG) sensing method applied to glucose monitoring in which an optical WBG glucose sensor, flexible microfluidic chip, and peripheral optoelectronics circuit are employed for efficient and rapid monitoring of glucose levels. The integrated lab-on-a-chip optical glucose sensing system approach involves WBG device design, WBG device fabrication, microfluidic chip design, light source bonding, immobilization of the enzyme, experimental characterization of the microfluidic chip, and experimental characterization of the WBG sensor. The proposed technology represents new opportunities for designing novel optical glucose sensing technologies and has great potential for final wearable blood glucose sensing system applications for continuous glucose monitoring soon.
