Commissioning of the Cylindrical GEM Inner Tracker for the BESIII experiment

The Cylindrical GEM Inner Tracker (CGEM-IT) is the detector designed to replace the innermost part of the Multilayer Drift Chamber (MDC) of the Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII) experiment, which is affected by an aging-related decrease in performance. The new detector’s construction was completed in August 2023 and the project has now entered its commissioning stage. This article offers an overview of the project and reports the first results of the cosmic ray data-taking with the complete CGEM-IT, the purpose of which is to validate its performance before installation in late 2024.
