BOX BEHNKEN DESIGN FOR OPTIMIZATION OF ESSENTIAL OIL EXTRACTION OF GINGER (Zingibereceae) BY MICROWAVE HYDRODISTILLATION METHOD
One of the new, effective extraction methods for obtaining essential oils is microwave hydro distillation (MHD). The advantages of this method include a short extraction time, good oil quality, and high yield. The aim of this research is to obtain ginger oil as a fragrance ingredient through the microwave hydro distillation (MHD) process. The operating parameters of the MHD process, such as extraction time, microwave power, and feed-to-solvent ratio, were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) obtained through Box-Behnken Design (BBD). This design was carried out to minimize the number of experiments, identify the significant influence of each parameter, and observe parameter interaction. The research result showed that the optimal yield was obtained under the following conditions: power of 600W, material size of 2 cm, and feed-to-solvent ratio of 2 g/mL, with an optimal yield of 2.1%. The use of the MHD method has proven to be effective in extracting ginger oil with a high yield in a shorter time.
