Basic Research to Propose Ways to Improve AI Literacy Liberal Arts Education for College Students

This study is a basic study that seeks to propose ways to improve college student AI literacy in liberal arts education based on the results revealed through the operation of university liberal arts classes to cultivate AI literacy, which is essential in the AI era.The study, "Artificial Intelligence for Everyone to Learn," was operated as a liberal arts subject to cultivate AI literacy in college students, hosted by the Inseong College of Liberal Arts at S University in Seoul. The class is open to all grades in the second semester of 2023, and the number of students enrolled is 40.After class completion, a class satisfaction survey was conducted, and based on the results, a basic improvement plan for liberal arts education to cultivate college student AI literacy was presented. As a result of the class operation, the liberal arts classes cultivate college students' AI literacy skills and helps them understand artificial intelligence. The college students who participated in the classes were satisfied with the AI literacy liberal arts classes. They participated in the class with interest and recognized their AI literacy skills had been developed. The difficulty for students majoring and non-majoring requires improvement.Regarding the number of students enrolled and the promotion of new subjects, it is necessary to reflect on the university's situation and develop various improvement measures to help college students improve their AI literacy skills.Based on this, the basic improvement measures proposed are as follows.First, AI literacy education for college students should be designated and operated as a required liberal arts subject for everyone, regardless of AI-related major or non-major.Second, to cultivate college student AI literacy, it is necessary to differentiate between majors and non-majors and develop a curriculum according to the difficulty level.Third, it is necessary to ensure that anyone can experience a liberal arts education that fosters AI literacy and can be easily learned. It is necessary to consider each school's situation and determine an AI curriculum with different difficulty levels and an appropriate number of students.
