Evaluation of repeated serum amyloid a measurements to predict sepsis and mortality in critically ill neonatal foals
compared to the BG (36.8%; 7/19).Mean gastric reflux volume over 48 h was 36.4 +/ 38.9 L in CG, versus 20.7 +/ 40.9 L in BG.After 48 h, the proportion of POR was 31.6% in CG versus 21% in BG ( p = 0.4).The controls had a non-significantly higher survival rate (94.7%) than the BGs (78.9%).Considering POR-affected horses in both groups, the overall mortality rate was 23.8% (5/21).Main limitation: Small group size.Different surgical and medical management. Conclusion: PO bit chewing was well tolerated and may reduce the occurrence of POR in the immediate post-operative period of SI lesions.
