446 Over speeding in Bengaluru metropolitan region a population based cross sectional study

Background
Over speeding is the primary cause of road traffic fatalities in India as it affects the possibility and severity of the crash. Approximately 72.2% (40,450) of deaths occurred due to over speeding in India in 2022.
Objective
To estimate the overall and specific prevalence of over speeding in Bengaluru Metropolitan Region (BMR). To describe average vehicular speed based on type of vehicle, time of the day, type of road, vehicle ownership type, weekend/weekday and by survey location in Bengaluru Metropolitan Region (BMR).
Methodology
A population-based cross-sectional assessment of speeding was conducted by NIMHANS, Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit and Bengaluru Traffic Police in 25 random locations in BMR. Data regarding study variables and speeds was collected by a trained team using radar-speed gun and a hand-held digital device. Ethical clearance was obtained from NIMHANS ethics committee.
Results
The overall prevalence of over speeding was 30.6% and the average speed in BMR was 49.2±15.5. Average speeds and over speeding (%) were significantly higher among cars (Sedan), national highway, rural area and during Late night and early morning hours.
Conclusion:
The average speeds on roads conducive to speeding are notably higher. The findings emphasize the urgent need for stringent enforcement measures to curb excessive speeding and enhance road safety.
