A Comparative Study on the Urban Competitiveness for Sustainable Growth of Busan with Osaka and Shanghai

This study aims to compare Busan's urban competitiveness with Osaka and Shanghai for sustainable growth.Through previous research, the items that became the standard for comparison were broadly classified into two categories, and a comparative study was conducted. One is to ensure sustainable growth, and the other is quality of life. Each item was refined into five detailed items, and a quantitative comparative study was conducted on the urban competitiveness of the three cities.Based on the results of the analysis, the current situation of the three cities for each item was analyzed and compared. As a result of the study, except for carbon dioxide emissions in the quality of life category, Busan's competitiveness in most items was less competitive than Shanghai and Osaka. From a sustainability perspective, an urban inflow policy like Osaka is needed to prevent population decline. It is necessary to strengthen the attraction of foreign direct investment, strengthen the capabilities of universities with international competitiveness, expand aviation infrastructure, and attract several international events to enhance the image positioning as a MICE city.Regarding quality of life, it is necessary to improve GDP per capita by strengthening the industrial base, stabilizing the rise in consumer prices, expanding public libraries, and expanding urban parks within the original city center.Through this study, population growth and the proportion of the population participating in production are important in improving Busan's urban competitiveness.Expansion into a mega city and strengthening of university capabilities, which can serve as a foundation for expanding the industrial base necessary to improve urban competitiveness, are necessary and must be accompanied by not only port infrastructure and land transportation infrastructure but also aviation infrastructure. To achieve this, it is necessary to attract industries with high-added value to increase tax revenues that can guarantee the quality of life of city residents.
