Cover Feature: Highly Efficient Quenching of Singlet Oxygen by DNA Origami Nanostructures (Chem. Eur. J. 46/2024)
The scavenging of singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species by DNA origami nanostructures is explored in an antimicrobial photodynamic therapy setting. While genomic double-stranded DNA is a poor quencher of singlet oxygen, folding it into DNA origami nanostructures results in a drastically increased singlet oxygen quenching efficiency. DNA origami nanostructures thus have great potential to alleviate the oxidative stress caused by singlet oxygen in diverse therapeutic settings.
