Clausal Comparatives and Semantic Compositionality: With a Special Reference to Jordanian Arabic
This paper documents and analyzes two syntactic structures of clausal comparatives in Jordanian Arabic (JA) which involve free relative clauses in the standard of comparison. The paper shows that the two clauses in the standard of comparison are interpreted differently as both an individual-denoting and degree-description- denoting structure. The paper also provides two compositional semantic analyses for the two forms of clausal comparatives based on two different Schönfinkelizations of the comparative –er morpheme in grammar.
