Collective memory of the Iran-Iraq war (1980–1988) as a means of constructing the Iranian nation (based on materials from the Armenian community of Iran)
Introduction. The relevance of the research is due to the fact that in the modern world, turning to critical historical events is not just a sphere of attention of humanitarian knowledge, but also an integral part of modern political processes. With the help of collective memory, ideas about the past are constructed in the interests of the present. Collective memory can be used for various purposes – both to strengthen socio- political stability and national unity, and to increase tension in society and exacerbate existing conflicts. In this regard, the study raises the problem of the formation and functions of collective memory, with the help of which social structures and means collective memory is transmitted to various groups of the population. Methods. The methodological basis of the research is based on the fundamental principles of objectivity and consistency. The following methods were applied: structural method, method of comparative and critical analysis. Information and target analysis of textual information (periodicals; Internet resources of “web memorials”) was also carried out. Theoretical justification. Currently, the issue of collective memory is widely discussed in scientific discourse. The beginning of the study of this problem was laid in the first half of the XX century by Maurice Halbwachs, who introduced the term “collective memory” into scientific circulation and considered memory from the point of view of its social nature. Collective/historical memory is constructed by social groups and has a complex structure, and the durability of collective memory depends on the stability of the group and the strength of the community that formed it. Researchers are faced with the task of resolving the relationship between collective memory and personal memories; how collective memory helps to lay the foundations of national identity. Results and its discussion. In the Iranian post-revolutionary society, the memory of the Iran-Iraq War performs a consolidating function. This statement is based on the assessment of the interaction of the Iranian authorities with the Armenian Diaspora. The participation of soldiers from the Armenian Diaspora of Iran in the war is seen as a key event from the point of view of uniting Christians and Muslims to fight against an external enemy and defend the motherland.
