Jamming-Resilient Mirror Element Allocation Scheme for OIRS-aided UAV-based FSO Networks

Free space optics (FSO) presents a promising opportunity to improve next-generation network capacity with its unlicensed spectrum and wide bandwidth. However, jamming attacks, along with inherent anomalies in the FSO channel, pose a threat to the performance of FSO-based networks, particularly insecurity-sensitive applications such as critical are a surveillance, which requires a resilient communication infrastructure. To this end, the integration of optical intelligent reflecting surfaces (OIRS) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within FSO systems is considered a promising approach to counteract the vulnerability of FSO-based networks to jamming attacks. In this paper, we address the mirror-element allocation problem in OIRS-aided UAV-based FSO networks under proactive jamming, aiming to enhance network resilience and reliability in the face of adversarial interference. To ensure reliable transmission, we develop an optimization problem that improves the network performance in terms of sum rate and blocking probability by performing simultaneous jamming-aware mirror element allocation decisions while satisfying the user's rate demand and unsuccessful transmission constraints. The formulated optimization problem is shown to be a binary linear programming problem, which is generally NP-hard. Hence, in the jamming environment, we propose a batch-based sequential fixing linear programming procedure, referred to as the Jamming-Aware Mirror Element Allocation (JA-MEA) scheme, where mirror elements are optimally assigned to satisfy the rate demand of users. In addition, we compared the performance of the JA-MEA scheme with reference schemes such as Jamming-Unaware Mirror Element Allocation (JU-MEA), Jamming-Unaware Equal Mirror element Allocation (JU-EMA), and Jamming-Aware Equal Mirror element Allocation (JA-EMA) schemes. Through simulation experiments, we demonstrate significant performance enhancement of the proposed JA-MEA scheme compared to existing reference schemes.
