Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant Activities of the Leaves of Rumex acetosa Ethanol Extract

To evaluate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and Alzheimer’s activities of ethanol extract of Rumex acetosa (R. acetosa) leaves. In this context, the in vitro antioxidant activity was demonstrated by Flavonoid mg QE/g. Phenol mg GAE/g, Carotenoids µg/mL. The antiinflammatory activity was evaluated against heat, inhibiting the denaturation of albumin, cyclooxygenase, Lipo-oxygenase, nitric oxide production, and protease inhibition. The antiAlzheimer’s activity was evaluated by inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase assay and dopamine level. Total phenolic content was found respectively (48.79±1.71) while the positive control is 58.492 µg/ml (Gallic acid) mg gallic acid equivalent/g. The extract displayed significant inhibition of denaturation of albumin andprotease (43.56±0.27 and 48.15±0.38) respectively with the positive control employed being Aspirin (72.628 and 73.985). R. acetosa showed in vitro anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting heat-induced albumin denaturation and protease inhibition. Our results show that ethanol leaf extract of R. acetosa has good antioxidant activity and interesting anti inflammatory properties but moderate Alzheimer’s properties. The medicinal plant can be used to prevent oxidative and inflammatory processes.
