Three-dimensional joint inversion of magnetotelluric and surface wave data based on the variation of information

Joint inversion of geophysical data has been considered as a means of understanding underground structures because it can take advantage of different data sensitivities to reduce the scope of acceptable models. The traditional joint inversion of different physical properties establishes different parameter relationships generally through structural similarity, which has some limitations. Here, we have developed a joint inversion of magnetotelluric and surface wave data based on the variation of information (VI), and used it to study the tectonic activity and evolution history of the Helan Mountains-Yinchuan Basin in northwest China.

Abstract

Joint inversion of geophysical data has been considered as a means of understanding underground structures because it can take advantage of different data sensitivities to reduce the scope of acceptable models. The traditional joint inversion of different physical properties establishes different parameter relationships generally through structural similarity, which has some limitations. Here, we have developed a joint inversion of magnetotelluric and surface wave data based on the variation of information (VI), and used it to study the tectonic activity and evolution history of the Helan Mountains-Yinchuan Basin in northwest China.
