Racial and Ethnic Patient Care Disparities in Anesthesiology: History, Current State, and a Way Forward
( Anesth Analg . 2023. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006716) The literature on disparities in racial and ethnic patient care in anesthesiology is increasing but more can be done to advance the field. This review paper examines research findings and offers potential solutions to eliminate structural racism and implicit and explicit bias. The focus is on disparities in perioperative care, labor and delivery, pain clinics, and intensive care units. The review focuses on US studies and does not include studies in pediatric anesthesia or palliative care.
