Anesthesiology Resident Knowledge of Transfusion Medicine: Results From the Anesthesiology Transfusion Education Study

( Anesth Analg . 2024;138(3):655–663. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006327) Significant knowledge gaps exist in transfusion medicine across medical specialties, especially among trainees, potentially leading to unnecessary transfusion practices. Anesthesiology providers commonly administer blood products in the perioperative period, highlighting the need for resident anesthesiologists to acquire adequate transfusion knowledge, although there are limited published assessments. The Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion (BEST) Collaborative developed a transfusion medicine knowledge assessment tool validated through Rasch analysis. This tool has been used internationally to assess transfusion knowledge among medical trainees, revealing deficiencies and guiding educational improvements. A modified version of this assessment was administered to anesthesiology residents, with ethical approval and participant consent.
