How to Use AI for English Education in EFL Contexts: Several Suggestions from the Second Language Acquisition Perspectives

This paper explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English education through the lens of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) principles. It addresses the challenges EFL learners face, such as insufficient L2 input, limited meaningful interactions, and the difficulty of deactivating the L1. While AI offers significant advantages, including providing abundant, tailored L2 input and reducing anxiety associated with language practice, it also has notable limitations. This paper examines these limitations through SLA research and presents strategies to enhance accuracy, fluency, and socio-pragmatic competence using effective prompt engineering. It emphasizes the role of teachers in guiding AI use to ensure that feedback aligns with learners’ proficiency levels and educational needs. Furthermore, the paper suggests structured approaches to AI-facilitated learning to optimize educational outcomes. Integrating AI with traditional SLA principles presents a promising avenue for advancing EFL education, offering personalized and effective learning experiences.
