IMVR: Immersive Molong in Virtual Reality

In collaboration with the Penan community in Malaysia, we present an Immersive Molong VR (IMVR) application based on the indigenous concept of Molong. This unique experience enables users to develop a companionship with the living entities in a virtual space and fosters a deeper understanding of the Penan principles of bonding with nature and sustainable resource utilization. The application is developed in three stages, employing a collection of methods, techniques, and tools inspired by the community-based participatory design approach. It comprises multiple scenes where users can observe Penan cultural life in a 3D environment, select a companion (Olong), immerse or transform themselves in the Olong, and explore the world from the Olong's perspective. The application underwent several cycles of validation with community elders and co-designers, ensuring cultural appropriateness and immersive quality.
