The article is devoted to the study of the poetry of the Soviet and Russian poet Leonid Zavalnyuk and is aimed at studying one of the key motives in his lyrics – the motive of parting. This motif in Zavalnyuk's work is multifaceted: it is parting with family, with a small homeland, as well as with the woman he loves. In this article, we will turn specifically to the motive of parting with the beloved. It is worth noting that today Zavalnyuk's creative legacy remains poorly understood and this aspect has not previously been the subject of research. There are two periods when the poet turned to the motive of parting with his beloved: the period of formation and search for his own manner (1950–1960s) and the period of maturity (1990–2000s). Zavalnyuk's lyrics are distinguished by philosophical, autobiographical and ironic narration. The factor that caused the appearance of the motive for parting with his beloved is the poet's hard-felt parting with his second wife Rita Shiposh. This motif vividly expresses itself in the poem "Being honest is hard ...", which exists in two versions. In this poem, the poet rethinks the breakup that occurred, reconciles with it and takes responsibility for the event. Subsequently, the motive for parting with his beloved undergoes significant changes. In the poems "In white slippers", "Flu-like", "A woman is no stranger to widowhood", Zavalnyuk writes about the imminent separation from his third wife. As if sensing that he will die sooner, the poet, in fact, says goodbye to her. Foreseeing his own fate brings Zavalnyuk closer to many poets of the past.
