Bureacractic costs and firm behavior

This note sketches the theory of how bureaucratic costs can affect firm behaviour resulting in inefficiency and corruption. The canonical competitive model of the firm maximizing output subject to an input cost constraint is modified to include a second constraint capturing bureaucratic costs. That constraint imposes efficiency costs on firms which are explored for testable empirical hypotheses including willingness to make informal payments or pay bribes to bureaucrats.

Abstract

This note sketches the theory of how bureaucratic costs can affect firm behaviour resulting in inefficiency and corruption. The canonical competitive model of the firm maximizing output subject to an input cost constraint is modified to include a second constraint capturing bureaucratic costs. That constraint imposes efficiency costs on firms which are explored for testable empirical hypotheses including willingness to make informal payments or pay bribes to bureaucrats.
