Skid resistance in pavement-vehicle interaction with anti-lock braking systems

In this study, a method is proposed to evaluate the skid resistance performance of a pavement by considering the slip ratio and texture characteristics, taking the braking distance as the key index. Then, the influence of ABS on the braking behaviour of the vehicle under vehicle-road coupling will be clarified based on this method. Firstly, laboratory friction tests were performed to obtain the tire-pavement adhesion characteristic curves. Subsequently, the curves were imported into the Carsim for the representation of the frictional characteristics of the pavements. Finally, the braking process was simulated and the skid resistance of nine types of pavements was evaluated using braking distance as an indicator. The results show that ABS can significantly improve the braking performance of vehicles on a variety of pavements. The percentage reduction in braking distance is more significant as the pavement roughness increases. It is also found that ABS can effectively utilise the characteristics of the tire-pavement adhesion curve, and the adhesion coefficient is always controlled within the peak range. Consequently, the braking efficiency of the pavement will be improved as the peak value increases. The above methods serve as a reference for the investigation of skid resistance performance of pavement from vehicle-tire-pavement coupling simulation.
