Advanced vibration control of cantilevered composite plates using macro fiber composites and PID controllers
This study explores the dynamic response and control strategies of a cantilevered plate equipped with Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) patches. By employing both passive and active control methodologies, we investigate the interplay of parameters that govern the plate's vibrational behavior. The passive control approach, involving the introduction of mass and stiffness with varying damping coefficients, effectively absorbed and dissipated vibrational energy, validating the finite element (FE) model used. The simulations showed that increasing the damping coefficient from 0.0002 to 0.004 resulted in a 50% reduction in peak vibration amplitude. Active control using Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers demonstrated significant influence on the system’s dynamic response, with optimal configurations achieved through meticulous tuning. Specifically, the PID controller reduced vibration amplitude by up to 70% compared to the uncontrolled case. Simulations under step and sine wave inputs showcased the robustness and efficiency of the control strategies, particularly highlighting the effectiveness of finely-tuned PID parameters. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable guidelines for optimizing vibration control in real-world applications, enhancing structural integrity and performance. The findings contribute significantly to the field of structural dynamics and control, offering a foundation for future advancements in engineering applications.
