Abortion is a highly complex issue involving medical, legal, and ethical questions that provoke intense debates in both the healthcare and legal fields. From early civilizations, such as ancient China, to the present day, the practice of abortion and its regulation has varied significantly. In Brazil, the term "abortamento" is used to describe the act of interrupting pregnancy, while "aborto" refers to the product of this interruption. Historically, abortive procedures have been employed for various purposes, including population control and the defense of women's autonomy. This article explores the evolution of the concept of abortion, its medical and legal classifications, and the associated ethical complexities, with a particular focus on premature rupture of ovular membranes (PROM), a condition that presents significant clinical and legal challenges.
