Toughening of Supervision over Electronic Mass Media in Germany: A Threat to Media Freedoms?
The article analyzes a novelty in German law that establishes general supervision by specialized government bodies over the observance of journalistic due diligence in online media. Turning to doctrinal sources, normative material and practice, the author argues that the described regulation undermines the media freedoms enshrined in Article 5 I of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany and gives rise to a number of other constitutional and legal problems.
