Perceived Benefits of Interdisciplinary Coaching Strategies for Professional Vocalists: A Pilot Study

Professional vocalists, specifically teachers, are at increased risk of missing work and having vocal damage due to vocal misuse and overuse. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the perceptions of participants (N = 4) taking part in interdisciplinary voice coaching sessions with both a singing and theatre voice specialist. Participant perceptions were obtained using the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), individual weekly journals, and a post-study researcher-created questionnaire. Results are discussed in terms of potential for future research and application of results to mutli-disciplinary voice training options for professional voice users as a solution to mitigate voice problems.
