Multi-functional active frequency reconfigurable polarization converter using a simple DC bias circuit

A multi-functional active converter with frequency reconfiguration is proposed and experimentally verified. The unit cell is composed of two T-shaped metal patches connected with a PIN diode. Two metal vias are designed to connect the T-shaped metal to the ground. The T-shaped metal patches are slantly arranged to provide circular polarization conversion. By switching on and off the PIN diode, frequency reconfiguration can be realized. The DC bias is exerted to the PIN diode through two metal vias connecting to the ground. The ground is gracefully designed so that a very simple bias circuit is developed. It is demonstrated that three frequency bands are generated for both off and on states. An incident linear polarization can be converted to right-hand circular polarization, linear polarization, and left-hand circular polarization in these frequency bands, respectively. A circuit model is established to understand the principle of this design. It is found that circuit simulation is consistent with full wave simulation. Measurements conducted during the frequency range of 20-40 GHz shows that good agreement with simulation has been reached.
