Fuzzy Controller Design for Vehicle Speed Based on Distance Measurement Using Light Detection From Headlight

In this paper, we present a method for detecting the light from headlights using a camera and controlling the speed of a vehicle according to the light intensity using fuzzy logic control. MATLAB/SIMULINK is utilized to design the vehicle dynamic model and fuzzy controller. After acquiring the image of the light from headlight using a camera, the image is processed to calculate the distance. After converting the image to grayscale, image processing is conducted by segmenting the image based on a threshold. The values for the segmented area of the image are obtained by multiplying by weights and summing the products. Fuzzy control enables the handling of vague and ambiguous data, allowing control without complex mathematical modeling. Using fuzzy control, control is conducted without mathematical modeling for distance image values and vehicle speed. A fuzzy controller takes inputs of the previously calculated distance value and the vehicle’s speed and outputs torque accordingly to control the speed of the vehicle model. We create the membership functions and rules for the vehicle&quots speed, distance, and torque. The appropriate torque is outputted based on the vehicle’s position and velocity to gradually decrease the vehicle’s speed, ensuring that the vehicle comes to a stop with zero velocity at the set point.
