A study on the effects of opening in shear wall
Concrete shear wall systems are a Popular choice for earthquake resistance, owing to their proven effectiveness in previous seismic events. However, architectural requirements often necessitate the inclusion of openings in these shear walls, which can impact their effectiveness. These openings required for doors and windows, can significantly alter the seismic response of the structure. This study investigates the effects of such openings on a 10-storey frame shear wall building using ETABS finite element software and time history analysis.Present study compares the time period, displacement, storey acceleration and storey drift of shear walls with and without openings, as well as with varying sizes of openings. The comparative results indicate that shear walls without openings exhibit lower time periods, displacements, storey drifts and storey acceleration values compared to shear walls with different sizes of openings.
