Acceptability of cantilever staging for construction of tall pier cap

This abstract reviews the construction of tall piers using cantilever staging design, focusing on its innovative approach and practical applications in modern engineering.Cantilever staging is a construction method where structures are extended horizontally and supported only at one end, eliminating the buckling load will generate due structural instability. This technique is particularly advantageous for the construction of tall piers, often required in bridge and elevated highway projects.Generating of buckling load during construction of pier cap height beyond 30 m is a major design concern for staging and shuttering of pier cap for casting and there need for an environmentally safe design, cost effective, re-usable and efficient method for staging of pier cap beyond 30 m height.Among the different staging techniques, cantilever staging is found to very effective due to its technical feasibility, ability to eliminate buckling shear and comparative cost effective. The present study aims at devising an appropriate design of members for staging system under permissible limit as per Indian Standard. In present study ISA (50×50×6), ISMC (150), ISMB (200 & 250) and ISMC 100 are designed respectively as shuttering plate, primary member, secondary member and vertical prop for construction of staging inside and outside pier for different load combination. The members of staging inside and outside pier are checked against bending, shear and deflection are found to safe as per permissible limit when construction live load less than 10KN/m 2 recommended by IS: 800.Firstly the Secondary member failed in bending stress at construction live load of 10KN/m 2 .Also it was shown in design summary that beyond construction load 10KN/m 2 the next failure will be at primary member level due to higher interaction ratio in shear. The actual stress ratio of top chord, bottom chord, vertical and diagonal member of trusses are designed at STAAD pro software and found to be less than the permissible value 1(as per IS code).Hence the members (ISMC 200 & 150) are used in fabrication and erection of trusses inside pier and bracket outside pier is safe. Therefore it can be stated that cantilever staging techniques is impeccable for casting of pier cap beyond 30 m.
