Impact of Air Exposure on the Performance of the MnO2 Cathode in Aqueous Zn Batteries
We report that the electrolytic manganese dioxide cathode can exhibit an initial capacity near the theoretical capacity for two-electron transfer when the testing cells are exposed to air, much greater than the capacity when the cells are assembled under argon. We attribute the disparity to the following mechanism: MnO2 catalyzes O2 reduction to form an oxygen redox mediator that mediates the complete conversion of MnO2 to Mn2+ ions.
